Understanding the billing process

Before your appointment

  • We will verify your insurance coverage.

  • We encourage you to contact your insurance carrier to confirm covered services, benefits and referral requirements.

Day of appointment

Please bring:

  • A valid photo ID

  • Your current insurance card

At check-in, you will be asked to:

  • Confirm your contact information

  • Provide updates to insurance or employment information

  • Pay any applicable co-payments, co-insurance or deductible amounts

After your appointment

  • You will receive an Explanation of Benefits from your insurance company outlining what was covered.

  • UT Medicine will send you a bill for any remaining balance not paid by your insurance plan.

Depending on the services you receive, you may receive separate bills for professional services, diagnostic testing or procedural services. If you have questions about multiple bills, please call 1-833-UT-CARES (1-833-882-2737).

Pay your bill

You may pay your bill:

  • Online through your UT Medicine patient portal, powered by MyChart

If you need assistance setting up a payment plan, please call 1-833-UT-CARES (1-833-882-2737).

Self-pay and uninsured patients

If you do not have insurance or choose not to use insurance, self-pay options are available.

Uninsured patients may receive:

  • A 38% discount when payment is made in full at the time of service

  • A 25% discount when establishing and maintaining a payment plan

Patients must complete and sign an Uninsured Self-Pay Agreement Form. Discounts may be revoked if payment in full is not made or if a payment plan is not maintained.

Our financial counselors can also help determine eligibility for other coverage programs.

Protection against surprise billing

You have rights and protections against unexpected medical bills.

UT Medicine provides Good Faith Estimates to patients who request them and complies with federal protections against surprise billing.

Billing FAQs

Some services are billed separately. For example, you may receive one bill for your provider’s care and another for diagnostic testing or procedural services. If anything on your statement is unclear, please call 1-833-UT-CARES (1-833-882-2737).

After your insurance processes your claim, you will receive an Explanation of Benefits that shows what was covered. Once that process is complete, UT Medicine will send a statement for any remaining balance.

If your insurance denies coverage, you may be responsible for the balance. We recommend contacting your insurance carrier first to understand the reason for the denial. If additional documentation is needed, please call 1-833-UT-CARES (1-833-882-2737).

We understand that medical expenses can be unexpected. Payment plans may be available. If you need assistance setting up a payment plan, please call 1-833-UT-CARES (1-833-882-2737).

To request a Good Faith Estimate, please call 1-833-UT-CARES (1-833-882-2737). This estimate outlines the expected cost of scheduled services.
