About this service

UT Medicine offers Central Texas’ only pharyngeal high-resolution manometry service, an advanced diagnostic tool used to assess dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, in adults. Unlike imaging tests like a barium swallow study, this in-office procedure measures muscle pressures in real time to better understand how your throat functions during swallowing.

Led by licensed speech-language pathologists, the service helps pinpoint the specific areas of the throat that may not be working properly. Using that data, we design a personalized treatment plan that may include targeted rehabilitation exercises to improve swallowing function and enhance quality of life.

How it works

Pharyngeal high-resolution manometry uses a slim, flexible tube with pressure sensors, gently inserted through the nose to the upper esophagus. As you swallow different textures of food and liquid, the sensors record pressure patterns throughout your throat.

The results are displayed live so both you and your clinician can see which areas may be underperforming. This allows for immediate feedback and helps guide your treatment plan, including therapeutic exercises that target those specific weak points.
