About this service

The Imaging Center offers the latest 3D mammography technology for screening mammograms. Also known as tomosynthesis, 3D mammography creates a three-dimensional image of the breast using X-rays, giving radiologists a clearer view that can help detect suspicious masses or cancer earlier.

More accurate imaging means fewer callbacks and less anxiety about repeat screenings. This technology is particularly helpful for people with dense breast tissue, as the X-rays are taken from multiple angles to provide better visibility.

What to expect at your screening

Checking in:

When you arrive at the Health Transformation Building, take the elevators to the 9th floor. Our concierge staff will escort you to check in at the Imaging Center, and a staff member will then walk you to the mammography suite for your screening.

Insurance and billing:

We accept most major insurance plans and can also accommodate self-pay patients. Please note: Imaging studies at UT Medicine are interpreted by the radiologists at Austin Radiological Association (ARA), a separate entity. You will receive a separate bill from ARA for the interpretation of your mammogram.

What to wear:

Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing. You’ll be asked to remove your top and will be provided a gown during your exam. Please avoid wearing deodorant, perfume, lotions or creams on your chest area.

Results:

You should receive a letter within 3–5 business days. Results may appear in your patient portal before your provider has reviewed them. Once reviewed, your provider will follow up via the portal.

If follow-up imaging is needed, Austin Radiological Association will contact you within 72 hours of your screening.
